A 43-year-old man suffered serious injuries Friday, April 4 after being impaled by a metal bar outside Roywood Public School on Roywood Drive near York Mills Road and Victoria Park Avenue.

Police said the steel bar went about eight inches up the man’s anus when he climbed down a tree in the schoolyard around 7:20 a.m. He was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where he underwent surgery.

Police are investigating why the man was in the tree.

“He was able to tell officers that he was a victim of a robbery, and he climbed a tree to get away from the suspects,” Toronto police spokesperson Const. Wendy Drummond said. “The investigation is ongoing. We haven’t concluded anything. There are some things that need to be clarified.”

Det. Sgt. Ed Dzingala of 33 Division said the man’s story is a “little difficult to believe.” He said the victim was “in a lot of pain” though he is expected to survive.

Roywood Public School has about 250 students from kindergarten to Grade 5. A daycare centre is housed in the school building and serves about 50 children.

Police don’t have a description of the suspects in the alleged robbery.

Dzingala described the case as “very odd, very strange.”

Anyone with information can call police at 416-808-3300 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
